What "Custom" Actually Means in Cabinetry
The word gets used loosely. Three tiers exist in this industry, and the difference between them is measurable.
Stock, Semi-Custom, and Full Custom
- Stock cabinetry ships in fixed widths, usually in three-inch increments. Filler strips bridge whatever space is left over. Finish and door options are limited to a catalog.
- Semi-custom cabinetry starts from those same standard boxes but allows modifications: a different finish, a modified depth, an upgraded interior. The underlying sizing grid does not change.
- Custom kitchen cabinets begin with your field measurements. Width, height, depth, toe-kick, and interior configuration are all specified per unit. There is no catalog to work around.
Most cabinetry marketed as custom in Southern California is semi-custom. Ask any supplier one question: can you build a 34-and-a-half-inch base cabinet, or does it round to 33 or 36? The answer tells you which tier you are actually buying.
Built to Your Dimensions, Not the Nearest Increment
A standard 12-foot wall filled with stock cabinetry typically loses several inches to fillers. That space is not just lost storage. It is a visible seam where cabinetry meets wall, and it is the detail that separates a kitchen that looks designed from a kitchen that looks installed.
