The rail-to-stile joint opens as a hairline crack when a door is poorly made, and it shows most on painted finishes because paint bridges the joint and then splits along it. The panel groove should have been sized to allow movement. Fitted too tightly, seasonal expansion stresses the frame. The panel finish must be applied before assembly. If it was sprayed after the door was put together, seasonal contraction will eventually pull the panel back and reveal an unfinished line at its edge. Where We Advise Against It
We would rather lose the sale than install the wrong door. Raised panel kitchen cabinets are the wrong choice when:
- The architecture is genuinely contemporary or mid-century
- The kitchen is small, since heavy profile detail visually shrinks a compact room

Finishes for Traditional Cabinet Doors
Profiled doors accept finish treatments that flat doors cannot, because the shaping gives the finish somewhere to gather.
- Stained wood, where the profile shows grain moving through the shaped edge
- Painted finishes in full custom colour, which have overtaken stain in traditional kitchens nationally
- Glazing, where a tinted coat is worked into the profile recesses and wiped back, emphasising the shadow lines

Hardware
Raised panel kitchen cabinets are the door style where visible hardware is most clearly correct. The profile gives a pull or knob something to relate to. Cup pulls on drawers with knobs on doors is the traditional pairing and still the strongest. Handleless systems are not compatible with a profiled door face, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Standards and Materials
The ANSI/KCMA A161.1 standard tests both structure and finish. A door is held in a hotbox at 120°F and 70% relative humidity for one hour, returned to room conditions, then held in a coldbox at -5°F for one hour. Exterior surfaces face vinegar, lemon, orange and grape juices, ketchup, coffee, olive oil, and 100-proof alcohol for 24 hours and mustard for one hour, with no appreciable discoloration, blistering, checking, or film failure permitted. The standard also cycles doors and drawers 25,000 times and loads mounted wall cabinets to 600 pounds.
That hot-cold humidity cycle is the test that matters most for a five-piece door, because it is the condition that opens a weak rail-to-stile joint and exposes a panel fitted without movement allowance.
Composite wood products sold or imported in the United States must also be labeled compliant with EPA TSCA Title VI formaldehyde emission standards, in force since March 22, 2019 at levels identical to CARB ATCM Phase II limits.
Cleaning: The Honest Trade-Off
Raised panel kitchen cabinets are the most demanding door style to keep clean, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not lived with one near a cooktop.
A slab door wipes in one pass. A Shaker door needs the cloth worked into one recess. A raised panel door has the panel groove, the shaped panel edge, and often a moulded frame edge as well – three places grease and dust collect rather than one.
- Soft microfiber cloth, warm water, small amount of pH-neutral detergent, then dried
- Work a soft brush or the cloth edge into every profile, particularly on cabinets flanking the range
- Never use abrasive pads, solvents, or ammonia sprays
- Run the extraction fan every time you cook; on profiled doors this does more than any cleaning routine
- Address chips at the rail-to-stile joint promptly, since moisture entering there turns a cosmetic mark into a structural one
